How to Set Up Comment-to-DM on Instagram in 5 Minutes (2026)

A step-by-step setup guide for Instagram comment-to-DM automation: connect your account, pick a post, set keywords, write the DM, and test it. No code, official API only.

You've seen the "comment LINK and I'll DM you" posts. You want to run one yourself. This is the setup guide: connect your account, pick a post, choose a keyword, write the DM, and test it before a real reel points at it. It takes about five minutes once your account is ready.

No code. No password sharing. Just the steps.

Before you start: two things your account needs

Comment-to-DM runs through Instagram's official messaging API, and that API has two hard requirements:

  1. A Business or Creator account. Personal accounts can't connect to the API. If you're on a personal account, switch in Instagram's settings first. It's free and takes a minute.
  2. A Facebook Page linked to that account. Instagram's API access flows through a connected Page. Most Business accounts already have one. If not, create it and link it in your Instagram professional settings.

If you skip these, the tool you pick will refuse to connect, and that's the tool being honest with you rather than doing something Instagram doesn't allow. Any tool that connects without these, by asking for your Instagram password instead, is a red flag. More on that in official vs unofficial Instagram API.

Step 1: Connect your Instagram to the tool

Open the tool (we'll use heyy.to as the example, but the shape is the same everywhere that's built right). Click "connect Instagram." You'll be bounced to Instagram's own login screen, you approve the permissions, and you land back in the tool connected.

Notice what didn't happen: you never typed your Instagram password into the tool. You logged in on Instagram's page and granted access. That's the official OAuth flow, and it's the single most important safety check in this whole process.

Step 2: Pick the post or reel to watch

Choose which post the automation listens to. You have two ways to think about this:

  • One specific post. Best when you're running a campaign around a single reel or launch. The automation only fires on comments there.
  • A post you're about to publish. Set the automation up first, then post. Every comment from second one is covered.

Start with one post. You can always add more automations later. Pointing one automation at your entire account from day one is how you end up firing on comments you didn't mean to.

Step 3: Set your keyword

This is the word people comment to trigger the DM. Keep it short and unambiguous.

Good keywords: LINK, GUIDE, PRICE, YES, SEND.

Bad keywords: anything people type in normal conversation. Don't use the, love, nice, or please, or your automation fires on comments that were never meant for it.

Two settings usually sit next to the keyword field:

  • Exact match vs contains. "Contains" catches "send me the LINK please." "Exact" only fires on the word alone. Contains is friendlier for real humans who don't comment robotically.
  • Any comment. Some campaigns skip keywords entirely and DM everyone who comments. Useful for a giveaway, risky for a normal post because you'll DM people who were just saying "nice reel."

If your audience comments in Hindi or Hinglish, pick a keyword that survives both scripts, or use a tool that matches across languages. heyy.to handles Hindi and Marathi keyword matching because that's the audience it started with. A keyword like LINK typed in Roman script works across all of them.

Step 4: Write the DM

This is the message that lands in their inbox. You've got a few types to choose from:

DM typeUse it for
A linkSending them to your product, guide, or checkout
An image or cardA visual offer, a menu, a lookbook
A lead formCapturing an email or phone number inside the DM
An opening message + follow-upA warm hello, then the link a beat later

Keep the copy human. "Hey! Here's the link you asked for 👇" beats a wall of text. If you're capturing leads, say what they get for handing over their email, don't just demand it.

There's also an optional ask-to-follow step: the DM asks the person to follow you first, then delivers the link. It converts a commenter into a follower and a lead in one move. Don't force it on every automation, but for a lead magnet it earns its place.

Step 5: Turn on the public reply (optional)

Most tools let you reply once to the comment in public, automatically. Something like "Check your DMs! 📩". This does two things: it tells the commenter to look at their inbox, and it shows everyone else scrolling the comments that the thing works, which pulls more comments.

One rule: exactly one public reply per comment. A tool that spams every variant it has, or replies more than once, looks like a bot and reads badly. heyy.to sends exactly one reply per matched comment by design. If your tool floods the thread, that's a problem.

Step 6: Test it before you go big

This is the step people skip and regret. Before you point a big reel at the automation:

  1. Turn the automation on.
  2. Comment your own keyword on the post from a second account (or ask a friend).
  3. Confirm the DM lands and looks right.
  4. Check the public reply fired once, not five times.

Then, and only then, promote the post. A viral reel firing a broken automation at 4,000 people is a bad afternoon.

What about rate limits?

Instagram caps how many DMs an account can send in a window, and those caps are per account. A good tool paces sends automatically so a viral post doesn't blow past the limit and get your account flagged. You shouldn't have to think about this, but you should confirm your tool does it. heyy.to applies per-account rate caps and has a kill switch if anything looks wrong. Read Instagram DM limits per day if you want the numbers.

One thing comment-to-DM will never do

It won't message people who didn't comment. It's reactive: someone comments your keyword, they get a DM. It does not cold-DM strangers, and it does not auto-DM new followers. That's not a missing feature, it's the line that keeps your account safe. We wrote about why we don't auto-DM new followers if you're curious why we refuse to build it.

FAQ

How do I add comment-to-DM on Instagram? Connect a Business or Creator account to a comment-to-DM tool through Instagram's official login, pick a post, set a keyword, write the DM, and turn it on. Instagram has no built-in comment-to-DM, so you need a dedicated tool.

Do I need to know how to code? No. Every reputable comment-to-DM tool is point-and-click. You're picking a post and typing a message, not writing scripts.

How long does setup take? About five minutes once your account is a Business or Creator account with a linked Page. The account prep is the only part that can take longer if you're starting from a personal account.

Is this safe for my account? Yes, if the tool uses the official Instagram API and paces sends. The unsafe path is any tool that asks for your Instagram password. See is Instagram automation safe.

That's the whole setup. One trigger, one action, tested before you scale it. If you want comment-to-DM done cleanly on the official API with a flat price and no per-contact billing, that's what heyy.to is built for.
